The American bison (Bison bison; pl.: bison), commonly known as the American buffalo, or simply buffalo (not to be confused with true buffalo), is a species of bison that is endemic (or native) to North America.

2024年4月5日 · By the early 19th century, Plains Native Americans had perfected a range of horseback bison-hunting methods tailored to the region’s seasons and landscapes. In winter, they guided bison into snow-filled gulches or drifts, while summer hunts led them to swamps, rivers, or makeshift corrals.

By the close of the eighteenth century the last buffalo herd of Pennsylvania bison numbering nearly 400 animals, of all ages had taken refuge in the wilds of the Seven Mountains. While the bison means many things to many people, the role they played was undeniable.

The bison is one of the great American symbols. The bison represents the Old West and all of its mythology and folklore. The bison bull represents great strength and endurance. It is an animal that was hunted almost to extinction, but has returned to a comfortable economic position in American life today. (See Image 1)
