Canterbury Cathedral, Kent. The West Window. Standing under the crossing, with the quire screen behind, we get this splendid view of the west window. The oldest window in Canterbury Cathedral shows Adam delving and dates to about 1176. In the 18th century this window, and others, were moved to be part of the West Window.

The pulpitum, a large stone screen standing between the crossing and the choir (Image 1), was built around 1450. It was constructed round the earlier screen of Prior Eastry which in turn had stood since 1305. Such screens demarcated the area used by monks (the choir) from that available for public worship (the nave).

Beyond the Victorian style pulpit, an intricate screen separates the nave from the choir beyond. Originally constructed by Prior Chillenden around the turn of the 15th century, this stone has withstood the fires and reconstructions that have shaped the rest of the church around it.

The screen comprises a plain stone wall which is hidden by the present choir stalls surmounted by a series of twin lights that have typical details of the Decorated period, carving, pierced tracery and ogee curves, above this are square carved flowers, pierced trefoils and finally an embattled crest; the total height is 14 feet.

2019年3月24日 · Screen between Nave and Choir–The screen is the work of Prior Chillenden (1391-1411). On it are carved fix figures. All wear crowns, but no record remains of their identity.

One of the most striking features of the Cathedral interior is the pulpitum screen dividing the nave from the quire. This stone screen is beatuifully carved, with niches holding statues of saints. The screen was completed around 1450.
