The McMurdo Ice Shelf is the portion of the Ross Ice Shelf bounded by McMurdo Sound and Ross Island on the north and Minna Bluff on the south. Studies show this feature has characteristics quite distinct from the Ross Ice Shelf and merits individual naming.

2012年6月1日 · The first drilling project, the McMurdo Ice Shelf Project, obtained a ∼1285 m drill core (AND-1B) by drilling from a platform located on the McMurdo Ice Shelf at the Windless Bight region of the Ross Ice Shelf in 2006. The stratigraphic succession recovered by AND-1B records a Late Miocene to Pleistocene climate and tectonic history at the site.

This comprehensive compilation of photographs records many of the key characteristics of a very unusual ice shelf. It has been described as “the strangest ice shelf in the world” on account of its upper surface being littered with dead organisms and being riven by deep meltwater channels.

Habitats under ice shelves are minimally explored, primarily because of technological limitations. These areas are separated from photosynthetic primary productivity by thick ice and distance to open water. Nevertheless, a diverse macrofaunal benthic community was discovered at 188 m depth, 80 km back from the edge of the McMurdo Ice Shelf.

The recent discovery (Gow and others, 1965) of a layer of fresh water under the McMurdo Ice Shelf invites a reconsideration of the early theory of its genesis. A general description of the area is given to record the wide area in which marine bottom deposits overlie freshwater ice.

During the 1962-63 summer, an extensive glaciological programme was begun on the McMurdo Ice Shelf. This area of about 20 miles east to west and 40 miles north to south, receives some ice flow from the Ross Ice Shelf to the east, with a major contribution from the Aurora. and Terror Glaciers to the north.

The McMurdo Ice Shelf is an ablation region on the northwestern side of the Ross Ice Shelf. The surface forms the largest non-marine aquatic ecosystem in the McMurdo Sound region with an interlinking system of lakes, pools and streams occuring across more than 1500 km 2.
