This month, we will see construction begin on the new Grand Staircase, to be completed by the end of November 2024. Given the limited resources and increasing costs, building a full replica of the original Grand Staircase was not possible.

LA GRANDE, Ore. – The Grand Staircase project at Eastern Oregon University continues to make progress over the winter, with plans in place for completion by the fall of 2024. Work on removing the Grand Staircase structure is anticipated to resume early next year with a new archaeological team on-site Jan 3-19, 2024.

Friends of the Grand Staircase is an informal organization established in 2014 to raise awareness of the Grand Staircase on the Eastern Oregon University campus in La Grande, Oregon. In addition, we worked with the university and many others to obtain funds for its restoration.

LA GRANDE, Ore. – Eastern Oregon University has selected Garco Construction for renovation of its historic Grand Staircase and the project is getting underway immediately. Construction is scheduled to commence during the first three weeks of December, starting with the removal of the current structure.
