The American Federation of Labor (A.F. of L. or AFL) was founded on December 8, 1886. Its predecessor, the Federation of Organized Trade and Labor Unions (FOTLU), was formed by members of the Knights of Labor (KOL) and labor leaders including Samuel Gompers.

Gompers became the first president of the AFL and held that post, except for one year (1895), from 1886 until his death in 1924. Under the AFL's plan of organization, individual workers held membership in craft unions, while those unions belonged to, or were affiliated with, the AFL.
