Yousuf Karsh CC RCA FRPS (December 23, 1908 – July 13, 2002) was an Armenian–Canadian photographer known for his portraits of notable individuals. He has been described as one of the greatest portrait photographers of the 20th century.

During his career he held 15,312 sittings, produced over 250,000 negatives, and left an indelible artistic and historic record of the men and women who shaped the twentieth century. Karsh’s portraits of many of those who sat before his camera are the definitive images that we remember.

In 1998, Karsh celebrated his 90th birthday. Queen Elizabeth II opened his exhibition, “Karsh in London,” at the renovated Canada House in Trafalgar Square. That same year Karsh was honored with the Fox Talbot Award. He died in Boston in July, 2002.
