Generally, the basic morphologies are spheres (coccus) and round-ended cylinders or rod shaped (bacillus). But, there are also other morphologies such as helically twisted cylinders (example Spirochetes), cylinders curved in one plane (selenomonads) and unusual morphologies (the square, flat box-shaped cells of the Archaean genus Haloquadratum).

These motile, gram-negative bacilli are classified into eight genera primarily on the basis of habitat, pathogenicity, phylogeny, morphological and physiological characteristics. These long slender bacteria are only a fraction of a micron in diameter but 5 to 250 microns long.

Bacteria are classified by shape into three primary groups: cocci, bacilli, and spiral-shaped. The cocci are round, the bacilli are rods, and the spiral-shaped bacteria are either rigid (spirilla) or flexible (spirochetes). These three primary bacteria shapes determine the bacteria’s morphological characteristics.

Spirilla (sing. spirillum) shapes are curved-shaped bacteria which can range from a gently curved shape to a corkscrew spiral. Many spirilla are rigid and able to move. The length of rod-shaped bacteria is over 2–100 μm. Spiral-shaped bacteria occur in one of three forms: vibrio, spirillum, and spirochete (Fig. 7.1 c): (i) Vibrio.
