A Home for the Dharma in the West

One of the first highly educated Tibetan lamas in exile to take up residence in the western hemisphere, Rinpoche chose California as his headquarters. He has lived here ever since and has established the Tibetan Nyingma Meditation Center in 1969 in Berkeley.

The golden domes and spires of the temples can be seen peaking over the treetops near coastal Highway 1, and the grand Enlightenment Stupa, which stands at a hundred and thirteen feet, glints the brightest of all.

Odiyan Retreat Center’s mission is establishing a home for the Dharma in the West and to support Buddhist centers and practitioners in Asia.

The temples and monuments of Odiyan, a retreat center and monastery, express this beauty. By giving form to the teachings, Odiyan helps assure that in the future those teachings will flourish in the Western world.

Among his many unique accomplishments, Tarthang Tulku is the founder of the Odiyan Buddhist Retreat Center and the Nyingma Monlam Chenmo World Peace Ceremony held annually at Bodh Gaya, India, where, since 1989, he has freely distributed more than six million sacred texts to lamas, monks, and nuns of the Tibetan community.

In the west, Odiyan Country Center and a growing range of art projects manifest the beauty of the Dharma as a living force for transformation. In the north, the Nyingma Institute makes the teachings more widely available.
