Lower Chesapeake Bay Fishing Report, January 16 Update: Blue catfish are offering the best fishing opportunities in the Lower Bay this week. Ice is building up in tidal rivers and smaller tributaries making access difficult in areas.

The Chesapeake Bay (/ ˈ tʃ ɛ s ə p iː k / CHESS-ə-peek) is the largest estuary in the United States. The bay is located in the Mid-Atlantic region and is primarily separated from the Atlantic Ocean by the Delmarva Peninsula, including parts of the Eastern Shore of Maryland, the Eastern Shore of Virginia, and the state of Delaware.

The Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel pilings are holding striped bass, with school-sized rockfish abundant throughout the lower bay, particularly at night near lit bridges and piers. Sizable puppy drum are being caught in inlets, rivers, and ocean surf.

Cobia have been a main target for many boats this month as we start to get into the heart of the season. Trollers and chummers are picking up fish with about equal success.
