Old Main (originally called "Main Building") is The Pennsylvania State University's first building of major significance. First completed in 1867, the current incarnation of the building was completed in 1930. Today, Old Main serves as the administrative center of Penn State, housing the offices of the president and other officials.

Old Main is the administrative headquarters of Penn State and an iconic symbol of the university. Constructed in 1930, it is the second building to occupy the site on a hill that overlooks an expansive lawn descending to what is now College Avenue. The first, completed in 1863, was for nearly 30 years the institution’s sole building.

Constructed of native limestone quarried near campus, the Main building housed the entire college, including classrooms, offices, and dorms, and was the only building on campus for some thirty years. The building became known as Old Main ca. 1906.

A new Old Main was built in essentially the same footprint, employing a steel frame and much of the limestone salvaged from the original building. Designed by Charles Klauder in Federal Revivalist style, the new building was an administrative center and student union and, at some $840,000, was the most expensive building on campus at the time ...

The College building (usually referred to today as the original Old Main) was designed by Hugh N. McAllister, a Bellefonte lawyer and local trustee. The massive five-story, five-bay structure was constructed of limestone quarried a few hundred yards away from the building to the southeast.
