Pueblo Bonito (Spanish for beautiful town) is the largest and best-known great house in Chaco Culture National Historical Park, northern New Mexico. It was built by the Ancestral Puebloans who occupied the structure between AD 828 and 1126.

The cliff dwellings of Mesa Verde are some of the most notable and best preserved in North America. Sometime during the late 1190s, after primarily living on the mesa tops for 600 years, many Ancestral Pueblo people began moving into pueblos they built into natural cliff alcoves.

Pueblo Bonito is amongst the largest and most completely excavated archaeological sites in the U.S. Southwest. It encompasses approximately 600 masonry rooms up to four storeys in height, as well as around 37 semi-subterranean masonry-lined structures (kivas), which were probably used primarily for ritual activities.

2023年9月2日 · Pueblo Bonito is situated immediately adjacent to the sheer north wall of Chaco Canyon. It is so close to the cliff that in 1941 a massive piece of the cliff—some 30,000 tons of sandstone—collapsed and obliterated thirty rooms of Pueblo Bonito.

Pueblo Bonito is the largest ancient dwelling at Chaco Canyon, and in fact the largest known Anasazi dwelling. The South wall (running vertically along the right of the photograph) is nearly 175 meters long.
