It also allows slight medial rotation during flexion and the last stage of extension of the knee, as well as lateral rotation when “unlocking” the knee.

Textbook representations of the genicular arterial anastomosis show a large direct communication between the descending branch of the lateral circumflex femoral artery (DBLCFA) and a genicular branch of the popliteal artery but this is not compatible with clinical experience.

Cadaveric dissection was undertaken to provide a complete description of the relevant arterial anatomy in order to perform safe and effective GAE. Twenty human lower limb specimens were dissected.
