Normally, there are only 40 cars in the Daytona 500, but this year, the race will have 41, thanks to NASCAR’s Open Exemption Provisional, which allows what the governing body deems as world-class drivers to enter the Daytona 500 if they don’t qualify on speed. Castroneves will get credit if he wins the race but no prize money or points.

The 67th Daytona 500 will have a 41st driver as four-time Indy 500 winner Helio Castroneves will use a controversial new NASCAR provisional to make his Cup debut in The Great American Race. Castroneves crashed on Lap 14 in the first Duel qualifying race.

Castroneves was swept up in two early accidents before rallying back to be within one lap of a race victory in his first ARCA race.
