韦伯之所以能够拍到这些影像,是因为存在一种被称为“光回波(light echo)”的现象。假如有恒星爆发,其产生的闪光如果与周边的尘埃团或气体云遭遇,那么随着光波的不断推进,尘埃团或气体云会由里向外、由近及远被先后照亮。在可见光波段上产生的回波是尘埃物质反射的闪光,而在红外波段上产生的回波是物质被强辐射加热后自行产生的。
