The WNBA reportedly applied for trademarks for the Houston Comets, Detroit Shock, Miami Sol and Charlotte Sting in recent weeks, suggesting those four cities are among the leaders for expansion.

The Comets' final season came in 2008, when a failed sale from former owner Holton Koch and subsequent WNBA takeover led to a dissolution of the franchise. The Comets' ending was dispiriting.
