The long-running pay dispute between the NSW government and rail union has escalated into a bitter war of words that left commuters stranded, with more than 400 cancelled services on Friday.

Commuters travelling on Sydney Trains have been advised to allow extra time or choose alternate transport as industrial action disrupts services on Friday.

Commuters have been warned to prepare for delays amid a bitter dispute between the rail union and the NSW government.
