In 1961, the Albrecht family founded the first discount grocery store in Germany. In 1976, the company opened its first Aldi store in Iowa. Aldi is headquartered in Batavia, Illinois, with stores across 38 states and more than 45,000 employees.

The company stated that outside the Southeast region of the U.S., it has plans to add to its “established footprint” in the Northeast and Midwest.

Aldi's five-year national growth strategy also includes expanding to locations in Las Vegas and the Southeast coast while continuing to expand its footprint in the Midwes t, the company said. By 2028, the chain expects to increase its footprint by 800 stores as part of a continuing expansion.
