The Kai-Sei era is a new series of connected comics "each one expertly designed to unleash completely different genres and tones for all kinds of fans," according to IDW. The term "Kai-Sei" refers to the radioactive energy that has suffused the Earth, leading to the rise of giant beasts such as Godzilla.

IDW Publishing has partnered with Toho for over a decade to tell tales of Godzilla in American comics. This week, the two companies committed to continuing their partnership through 2029, announcing they have agreed to push the King of the Monsters to new heights with a shared comic book universe.

“Da King of da Monsters has come to da Windy City!” a shocked CTA train operator gulps in “Godzilla vs. Chicago,” the first issue of a limited “Godzilla vs. America” series by IDW, the publisher of the “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles,” “Star Trek” and “Goosebumps” comics. Unfortunately, Blue Line service is interrupted.

Local comic book lovers will soon get to see their own city in ink, before Chicago is destroyed by Godzilla. “Yeah, I’m going to get a billion copies, and I expect to sell them all over the summer.”
