A rare blood moon lunar eclipse — which hasn’t happened in the U.S. since 2022 — was visible for skywatchers across most of North and South America, as well as the west side of Africa and Europe, the eastern parts of Australia and Russia and northern Japan.

Sign up for our Newsletters It's called the Full Blood Worm Moon because of the reddish tinge it gives when moon passing into the Earth's shadow.

In the UK, the Moon started to turn red at around 5.30am and became most visible just before 6.30am. According to the Royal Observatory, the eclipse was expected to reach its peak at 6.58am, just after the Moon set. Lucky UK stargazers who were treated to clear skies could therefore witness most of the rare celestial display.
