More than 100 years of Neiman Marcus history appears to be ending because of a 25-foot-long plot of dirt sitting under the iconic downtown Dallas department store’s escalators. Neiman Marcus plans to shutter its flagship store at 1618 Main St.

Herbert Marcus Sr., his sister, Carrie Marcus Neiman, and her husband A.L. Neiman opened the retailer's first store in Dallas, Texas, in 1907.

Saks Global announced the Dallas flagship Neiman Marcus store will close on March 31 claiming the building landlord forced the closure.

There’s also the attempted exit from Neiman Marcus’ relatively new office lease at Cityplace Tower in Uptown— a move that the landlord, NexPoint, disputes is even allowed. Then, there’s Saks’ announcement that it’s injecting $100 million into the NorthPark location of Neiman Marcus for renovations.

The news comes less than a year after Neiman Marcus’ merger with Saks Fifth Avenue and shortly after the announcement of the closing of their CityPlace offices.

Neiman Marcus announced Tuesday it will close its flagship store in downtown Dallas after more than 100 years. The store will close March 31st after parent company Saks Global was ordered to terminate occupancy.

Back-to-back announcements centered on an iconic Dallas retail brand is sending shockwaves through the region. Neiman Marcus will shutter its flagship downtown Dallas store effective March 31, just months after Saks Global acquired the luxury retailer for $2.65 billion.

The closure in downtown Dallas is not tied to the recent acquisition by Saks Global, according to an internal memo sent Feb. 18 to employees by Saks Global Operating Group CEO Marc Metrick acquired by the Morning News. Metrick in the memo blamed the closure on an inability to reach an agreement with the building's landlord.
