Microsoft announced on Friday that it will be retiring Skype in May and putting all of its video conferencing resources into Microsoft Teams.

Skype has been a favored communication platform for many since it was created over two decades ago, but Microsoft has decided to shut it down this year.

Microsoft said today it will be retiring the original free internet calling app Skype in May and migrating customers to Microsoft Teams.

Microsoft is stopping Skype Credit and other paid Skype offers to new customers. Current users can leverage Skype Credits and subscriptions until the end of the next renewal period. Even after May 5, the Skype Dial Pad will remain available to remaining paid users from within Teams and the Skype web portal.

Skype was an a pioneer in live video-calling that was bought by Microsoft in 2011, but was later overtaken by competing services.
